HISTORY: MOVIE "LORD OF WAR"
Hi everybody!!!
Since we missed this week class and our II Half of the II Term is about to finish, you need to work at home to complete our activities.
MOVIE: LORD OF WAR (2005) with Nicholas Cage
This movie charts the rise and fall of Yuri Orlov,
from his early days in the early 1980s in Little Odessa, selling guns to
mobsters in his local neighborhood, through to his ascension through the decade
of excess and indulgence into the early 1990s, where he forms a business
partnership with an African warlord and his psychotic son. This movie also
charts his relationship through the years with his younger brother, his
marriage to a famous model, his relentless pursuit by a determined INTERPOL
Agent and his inner demons that sway between his drive for success and the
immorality of what he does.
There are many free on line sources to get access to the movie.

If we are able to attend classes next week, be prepared to answer the following questions related to the movie:
1. Write a ten lines summary of the movie stating what it is about, the period of time and place when and where the story takes place, and the importance of the characters Yuri Orlov, Vitaly Orlov and Jack Valentine.
2. Explain what happened in the world after the dissolution of the USSR related to ARMAMENT and how the legal and illegal arms business took advantage of it. Consider Venezuela's case that under the government of Hugo Chavez bought $2 Billion in Russian arms in 2008. Check the links and give your opinion.

3. Read and analyze the following quote: Consider Venezuela's current situation. "Colectivos" are armed to the teeth protecting or defending who?, para-military forces have presence in our country protecting or defending whose rights?
"Weapons in the wrong hands have acute, immediate impacts on personal, economic, social, civil, and
political rights. In the long term, these effects derail human development."
Hoping we can meet next week in class!!!
